The city of Korčula is touristic, economic and cultural centre of the same named island. It’s one of the best reserved towns of the Middle Ages in the Mediterranean. Antic writers describe it as a ‘stone city’ which was called ‘Korkyra Melaina’ and was founded by the Greek colonists from Asia Minor town Knidos. After the Greeks, Illyrians and Romans, Croats came to Korčula in the 9th century and remained the only people of town and island itself. In 1214, Statue of Korčula was written and it’s one of the oldest legal files in this part of Europe. This ‘stone city’ is known as the birth place of the well known world traveller Marco Polo in which his house still exists. Korčula is also famous for 400 years old knight game Moreška, a spectacular, dynamic dance with swords and fighting in which good, justice and honesty always win.

Korčula with it’s beauty always attracts tourists from all over the world. Its rich past is also visible in the architecture of Korčula where gothic style and Renaissance dominate with the remains of Romanesque style which is preserved in our cathedrals, city walls and towers.

So as a tourist you can explore many monuments and institutions such as Opat treasury, Collection of icons, painting galleries and old cathedrals in which are kept many art works from many artist from Leonardo Da Vinci to Jacopo Tintoretto.
